Being back on his own territory was always a relief for Leonid. As he sped across the lawn, making for the cover of the trees, he knew Francesca was close behind. He wasn’t running at full pelt but he was still faster than most wolves and he was surprised Francesca was managing to keep up.

As he ran into the forest, he slowed to allow her a chance to catch her breath. He took a moment to admire her. She was an incredible beauty. With that long sleek body exuding strength there was no doubting she was an ideal alpha female. He studied her and realized for the first time there was no other member of the pack quite like her. She had thick, dark fur and deep brown eyes. While the rest of his pack blended into the background during the long winter months, she would stand out. It made her an easier target for those seeking to hurt him through his mate. He would have to ensure the enemies he suspected he had within the pack were purged before the first snows fell.

He led Francesca deeper into the woods toward the place he felt most at ease. There was a path down to the lake he wanted to show her but with each step he sensed she was becoming more and more nervous. He listened carefully for approaching danger, breathing in the scents that surrounded them but detected nothing unsettling. In the absence of another threat, he realized he must be the one making her fearful. He had no idea why, though.

As he turned to face her, she froze. Her legs trembled and when he walked around her, the shaking intensified. He had no idea what was wrong. Trying to calm her, he nuzzled his head against her neck. She let out a pitiful whine and before he could stop her, she fled through the trees. Francesca moved fast, but she didn’t know these woods and had to slow for obstacles Leonid knew to avoid. He cut her off as she came to a clearing and stood in front of her, his head held high, waiting for some show of submission from her. Instead, to his surprise, she bared her teeth as though ready to attack. At his answering snarl, she turned tail and ran back toward the house.

Stunned, Leonid stood for a full minute before giving chase. None of the males in his pack would have the balls to challenge him as she’d just done. No female would ever show such disrespect to her alpha. He couldn’t work out whether her actions deserved his admiration or despair. If anyone else had witnessed that display, he would have had to make an example of her. As it was, he would still have to mete out some punishment. Behavior like that would not be tolerated, even from his mate.

Emerging from the woods, he saw her approaching the house. By the time he caught up with her, she’d reverted to human form and was standing at the door, unable to open it without his help.
